2019 – What a year!

Snippets from the cover images of the top 5 posts of 2019

As you might have noted, this blog was rather quiet in 2019, and for good reason: It was quite the exciting year for your two favorite bloggers, so exciting in fact that even our traditional review post is a month late. We’ve already shared the major changes on social media, and we’ll tell you here as well why our lives kept us from blogging:

You see, we’ve both been extremely busy and our lives have seen some major changes. But we haven’t forgotten about this blog or you, dear reader. So let’s first use this moment to say thank you for your patience and for sticking with us. We’re also always happy to host guest posts or write about specific topics you’d like to see addressed – if we can do that, of course.

But now, for the actual review. It might be because they are so good, or because there was little new content, but the top 5 posts were all published before 2019. Here’s a countdown:

  1. Love Letters from Marie Curie – The story of Sho and Christina getting their Marie Sklodowska-Curie grants, it was quite the day.

  1. Screen, Baby – Let’s Look at Evidence, not Trends – A joint post by Nawal Abboub and Sho, check also the French version!

  1. How to write effective introductory emails – Guest poster Katie Von Holzen helps out with those awkward first emails

  1. The art of moving to the US for a postdoc (as a Marie Skłodowska Curie global fellow) – Scientists usually have to move around a lot, so let’s share experiences and advice to make the process more transparent (what are we signing up for) and exchange some tips! Thanks, Sho, for making the start!

  1. How to apply for a (Marie Sklodowska-Curie) post doc grant? – Our evergreen! We still stand by all these tips.

Our most popular new post, by the way, would certainly have made it in the top 5, if it hadn’t be posted so late in the year, so here is a special mention of our guest poster Marlieke van Kesteren, who allows us to repost her blog: Repost – A scientist’s path to a non-academic job: Tips and tricks

Now, it remains to wish all of you and us a very productive, successful, and happy 2020. We’re looking forward to continuing to master the new challenges this year…

Sho & Christina
